No routers in Surveillance View

Hello, I'm new to OpenNMS so please forgive me if this is a stupid question or if this post should be on the discussion list. I've just installed OpenNMS to see if it's something with which we can build a new bespoke OSS. Most of the basic things seem to be working with the exception of nothing appearing in the Surveillance View or Dashboard. I have created a new provisioning requisition with only routers in there for now. I assigned them all to the 'Routers' category but the Surveillance View and Dashboard both say "0 of 0" in the Routers category. All the nodes appear in the node list and the alarms and notifications are working fine when I test them. What am I missing? I've looked on the wiki but haven't found the solution yet. I tried re-assigning the nodes as 'Router' instead of 'Routers' (not sure what the difference is) but the result was the same. Any help much appreciated.
