Thanks for the reply. For this particular node, SNMP attributes show the correct name and reverse DNS finds the correct name from the IP and vice versa, but OpenNMS is still not listing the node correctly.

Is there anything else that needs to be set for OpenNMS to pick up the name from SNMP or reverse DNS? Either would do the job at this point. 

Another thought - I'm not deleting the data when deleting the node because we want to keep the history if we can. Would this stop OpenNMS picking up a new name?

If you have some authoritative list or database to work from you might ultimately want to convert to provisioning instead of discovery to get better control of the node labels and what is monitored.  Meanwhile,
discovered nodes should pick up names from either reverse dns   (does
'nslookup IP_address'  from the opennms server really give the right
name?) or the hostname picked up from snmp.
