Ok, this *may* indeed be related to the traffic disappearing.

If you keep the ping open in another window, does the dropped counter 
increase with the expected, but missing, icmp replies?

Now, it would be great to know why they are being dropped, but I may 
have to provide a patch for that, since we did not implement a verbose 
dropped counter yet.
