nothing - The only log entries in the servers are the client logging in but nothing after that
Thanks for the hint on disabling rekey requirement. Will give that a try

That's one possibility; another is that ProFTPD is treating the connection as idle (e.g. due to TimeoutIdle, TimeoutNoTransfer, etc) and is closing the connection abruptly, without sending a DISCONNECT message explicitly to the client.
In yours server logs, do you see these connections from the client? Can you see what the last messages logged, for that session, are?

Ah. Some SFTP clients do not handle SSH rekeying as the mod_sftp module would like. You might try explicitly configuring mod_sftp to not expect or require rekeying, using:
<IfModule mod_sftp.c>
...
SFTPRekey none
...
</IfModule>
