[Proftpd-user] Recent change caused problem with UserPassword directive?

I've had a proftpd server running just fine for years and just
recently something has changed that has caused the authentication to
not work.  I am using proftpd-1.3.5e (from EPEL) on Centos 7.  Because
the ftp service is used pretty rarely I don't know exactly when the
problem started happening, whether it was before or after various
package updates, etc.  The configuration file hasn't changed, though.
I'm using UserAlias / UserPassword and AnonRequirePassword in an
Anonymous block to create a virtual anonymous user account.  When I
remove the UserPassword/AnonRequirePassword directives from the
configuration, everything works fine, when I put the UserPassword
directive back in place I can't log in.  I've tried recreating the
password with "ftpasswd --hash" to ensure I have the right password.
Does this sound familiar to anybody? Any recommendations as to how go
about debugging this?  I've tried looking at the debug log and trace
log and it doesn't seem to include any details that would explain what
is happening here.
