thank you VERY much for you answer! I was already worried that the list
was orphaned....
Should I better use the forum?

Of course you are absolutely right: The writing clients (about 70
Windows boxes) cause the issue. They write to "this file in this dir"
and this is absolutely unnecessary.
But - and that's the full trouble - those clients are proprietary
software - no chance to configure anything. The clients used to write to
a Windows ftp server which doesn't seem to have a problem with that an
simply writes the filename without the leading ".\". Now that there is a
Linux ftp server, the ".\" become visible.

As a interims solution I wrote a tiny script that renames the files, but
that is quite rough....
