lines. The sequence is Carriage Return, followed by Line Feed.

this rfc ist from year 1985, so I think all clients and servers must use carriage return/line feed
If you are sure the old proftpd worked for you, you have to restore it from backup.
For me it looks like the problem is elsewhere.
What is the user backend ?
May it be possible proftpd can't reach the backend user database ?

I do not get viruses because I do not use MS software.
If you use Outlook then please do not put my email address in your
address-book so that WHEN you get a virus it won't use my address in the
From field.
