To me, that just means you are using virtual users in a seperate set
of user/group files.  Do you have the AuthUserFile and AuthGroupFile
settings?  If so, it's not unexpected that the ownership will look
different in the shell than in the ftp session.

What do the logs for proftpd say?

Did you update your config at all?  And if you leave the config the
exact same, but fall back to the older verion and it still works, then
we really need to see more logs.

So how did you install 1.3.7rc4?  Did you self compile and install
into a new location?  Did you make sure the rc4 version is loading the
right modules, etc?
