In working with the OP off-list, he discovered that the SSH private key had been renamed on the client side, causing the publickey authentication to fail unexpectedly. Using verbose client logging (e.g. `sftp -vvv ...`) revealed the issue. Once that was corrected, publickey authentication using proftpd+mod_sftp worked as expected.
