nope, symlinks is how you do it.

Nope.

pure-ftpd is a pretty simplistic ftp server.  If you need to be able to 
custom-tailor a virtual FTP filesystem with fine-grained per-directory 
permissions and such, you'll probably want to use something like proftpd :)
