[WARNING] Authentication failed

Hi everyone,

I installed pure-ftpd on a freebsd server  and configured it for virtual 
users, no anonymous login
but I can't login, I get

 530 Authentication failed, sorry

I really don't understand why, I use the same setup on another freebsd 
server and it works there
I use /usr/local/etc/pureftpd.passwd and after adding a user I use
pure-pw mkdb

anyone any ideas?
