Md5 Password

Hi

I'm Pureftpd 1.0.19-4 on Debian Sarge with a Mysql 4.1 DB and i'm
started to switch passwords from plain to md5. So i created a pwd
for my testuser with the mkpasspwd in debian:
	# mkpasswd -H md5 tester
	$1$3G5pmBnV$NsNgBB8lEE4c1SHQJkufj/

And edited my mysql.conf to "MYSQLCrypt md5" and the user couldn't
enter. Then i changed it to "MYSQLCrypt crypt" and it worked! How
does that make sense?
Is it not standard/default md5 password i created and what is the
diffence between md5 and crypt in the mysql.conf
The reason im so interested in this is that the user/password table
in MySQL has to be used for other services such as apache and
SMTP-gateway.
