There are.

The list server itself maintains an archive.  The "Welcome" message 
has instructions on how to get a list of commands that the list 
server supports, and a few of those commands can be used to retrieve 
old messages.

It's not terribly convenient to use, but it allowed me to find an old 
message which pointed to this web archive:

<http://projects.standblue.net/markive/lists.moto?list=pureftpd>

[Huh.  This is rather annoying...  The list server doesn't insert a 
"Reply-To" header, so I can't just click "Reply" to reply to the 
list.]
