    The MySQL configuration seems to be OK. I really mean "seems",
since I don't use MySQL, so beware ;)

    Can you test using unix authentication instead of MySQL auth and
see if you can log in as an anonymous user?

    The problem may be that the username or password (or both) are
mangled when retrieved, or maybe an error in your configuration
(although it seems OK to me) :??? Anyway, it's weird.

    I've cc'd the list, just in case.
