I had tried using -d -d, I misinterpreted the manual page. I ran manually with -dd but unfortunately I just see what I already have on the client, the error message in subject.

I didn't have these options. Added them, remounted, restarted ftpd, same result.

I guess I have no other option than strace. Or try 1.0.49.
