Yes, I have GPL in my product, but not in my application.  I would need to directly link to rdesktop which would contaminate my code with the copy-left.

If you are using Linux, you already have GPL code in your product. 
rdesktop also uses GPL. So how is this a problem?

This is not the case with rdesktop. Just as with Linux, there are many 
authors and just getting in touch with them all (to discuss alternative 
licensing) would be very difficult.

Wrong. FreeRDP is also GPL licensed, at least according to 
https://sourceforge.net/projects/freerdp/. It must be, since it's a fork 
of rdesktop.
