After a very long time, 'telnet: connect to address XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX: 
Connection timed out'

If I remove the port forwarding on the XP pro smoothwall end, and then 
try rdesktop, it immediately returns with 'ERROR: connect: Connection 
refused'

Thus, I'm beginning to think it must be something wrong with the way the 
XP pro box is trying to respond to the rdesktop request.
