running rdesktop from the command line, just to eliminate rdc from the 
equation.

Then you could try playing with the switches to see if you can improve 
reliability, reducing them to a bare minimum before increasing them again.  
Perhaps try a lower colour depth and without sound.

Both Ubuntu and Fedora are fairly bleeding-edge distros, so I wonder whether 
it could be the latest version of xorg that is causing a problem, perhaps 
specific to your graphics card.  Especially if it's the same client hardware 
on which you're experiencing this problem.  If you're using a proprietary 
graphics driver, you could try the open source equivalent, if only 
temporarily to see if that resolves the problem.

Just a few thoughts, hopefully someone will have experienced this problem for 
themselves and be able to advise.
