I tried this yesterday, worked fine for me. I'm running XP SP3 with all available patches. I doubt that the PreXPSP2ShellProtocolBehavior key is involved. Typically, an alternate shell fails because you are already logged in on the console. I've also heard that this doesn't work if the XP machine is joined to a domain.
