You could try preceding this with "padsp" from pulseaudio-utils (in Debian at 
least - not sure about fedora).

And you could try also redirecting a disk (any disk), e.g. -r disk:home=/home, 
as I understand that this was required in W2K8, in order to get sound 
working.

All just guesswork I'm sorry to say.
