I assume you are running "explorer.exe", which will give you a fullblown desktop, unless you set the NoDesktop registry key as per the other response. But the idea is that you don't run "explorer.exe", but instead run Excel, or Word or whatever app you need, creating suitable desktop icons to do so. These should work seamlessly without the registry hack. This then offers a much more seamless desktop experience, without the nuisance of having two taskbars/panels.
