Kickstarting the rdesktop project

10 years ago, the rdesktop project moved to Sourceforge. Shortly
thereafter, the different versions were merged, the community grew,
and the development picked up speed. Lately, however, development has
stalled. The project has failed to recruit new developers and
contributions have not been integrated quickly enough.

Therefore, we are attempting a "kickstart" of the rdesktop
project. Cendio is taking over the maintainership. We will do a new
release, try to integrate patches, and seek new developers. Long-term,
however, we believe that it would be even better if a maintainer
outside Cendio could be found. We believe that an Open Source
community gains from having developers and users from many different
organizations, countries and cultures. If you are interested in
contributing to rdesktop in any way, just contact me.

Another project called FreeRDP created a "fork" of rdesktop 2 years
ago. We believe that an additional open RDP implementation is positive
both for the RDP and Open Source community in general. Today, the
ambitions of the FreeRDP project are somewhat different from the
rdesktop project. For example, they have a slightly different feature
set, and a different licensing perspective. We believe that the GPL
license is still well suited for the rdesktop project today. We hope
that closer cooperation between the two projects may take place in the
future.
