If the application works on RDP client version 7 (Windows), but, crashes on RDP client version 5 (rdesktop), then there might be an issue that the application is expecting something in RDP that rdesktop does not support. A good test would be to run Windows 2000 RDP client (RDP 5) and see if the application crashes.
