rdesktop doesn't log in if not in focus

I use Awesome WM with rdesktop, and I've set up rules to show rdesktop on a specific tag. If that tag is not visible when I open rdesktop from the command line, with username and password supplied, rdesktop will hang at a black screen and not log in properly until I switch to the tag it's on. I can see this black screen for half a second or so when I switch to it. The remote computer runs Windows 7. If I don't switch to rdesktop for a couple of minutes after opening it, it will get stuck in this part of the login process and forever remain at the black screen - I have to kill it and start it again to log in properly. I can solve this by having rdesktop visible when I open it, but I don't see why it requires focus in order to log in when I already supplied a valid username and password? To clarify why this is useful: I have a script running in a loop to keep rdesktop connected to a remote machine that's not always online. If I'm not at my computer when that machine comes back, rdesktop will be there on another tag, stuck at a black screen, when I come back. Any help with this would be much appreciated.
