I would aim to identify the differences between your two 2008 R2
installations, service packs etc. You should also look for suspicious
event log entries on server and the client you used in the RDC
connection.

I hardly think its worth the time to spent to pinpoint the issue in
rdesktop which could trigger this issue. You can test run rdesktop in
different modes eg. with and without device redirection, other
color bitdepths etc.. to see if that affects the functionality.

But as you say, it works perfect on on server installation and i think
its best to identify the differences there instead..
