How do I compile 64 bit Samba on Solaris 8?

Wanting to use ClearCase and Samba on a Solaris 8 machine. Rational includes a technical note saying more open files are available, and thus performance improved when Samba is compiled in 64 bit mode. Rational was sent this info by the Samba team. My question:

I haven't found any docs on how to do this. Can someone point me in the right direction? I've got Forte compiler 6.2 and the sun linker and assembler in my path, but not gcc. Is it an option I give to configure?

I can use gcc if necessary, if so, which version? Are the gnu bin utils required?
