The same machine data is used by all the machines in the group. The machine group is on an isolated VLAN, and there's only permitted incoming traffic from another VLAN for updating data files on the local server. There are 2 users with read permission and 4 users with write permission to the only share. I chose another approach with a standalone server. There's really no need to use a domain for a few machines, which complicates things unnecessarily. My setup is using Archlinux, and I keep it reasonably fresh, currently at Samba 4.23.5. I started out with Debian when I set it up 3 years ago, but I never got it to work. The current setup has been working for 3 years without any problems. If you are interested, I can publish a more detailed description about the setup.
