upgrade 2x AD DC VM Debian 12.14/Samba 4.22.6 ->?Debian 13?/?Samba 4.24.4?

Hi, we have two Samba AD DCs on the school network, made last year's
holidays with great support from local gurus.
Both run as virtual machines, on relatively small disks of about 12 GB,
no other services besides AD DC are run on them (neither Samba share nor
DHCPD). One AD domain. I have a good understanding of Linux (but not
Debian specifically).

What is the optimal way to upgrade them, probably to Debian 13 and some
newer version of Samba (4.24.4 is currently up to date)?

I assume that there are at least two basic ones:
1) gradual removal of each DCs from the domain (and their ecological
disposal;), setting up new Debian 13/latest Samba VMs and including
them in the domain.

2) Some kind of in-place upgrade of Debian distribution 12 to 13, which
will also perform (by itself? with manual assistance?) an upgrade of
Samba to some higher version.

Can anyone advise which way is the easiest/fastest in this case?
