Hello,

As promised several months ago I try to let people know about the process
of RFC publishing the SILC protocol specifications in the IETF. Here are
the latest news on that.

I have received news from the IESG (Internet Engineering Steering Group)
after they had completed their few weeks of review of the SILC protocol
specifications as to be published in the Standards Track. They decided
that the SILC protocol would conflict with the current three IETF Working
Group efforts, simple, impp and xmpp and that there are no plans to submit
it as a Working Group effort or as a new Working Group candidate. For
this reason, they feel that there is not enough support within IETF
Community to publish the SILC specifications in the Standards Track.

This was pretty much what I expected because SILC was not developed in a
Working Group and IETF already has similar efforts going on. It is
unlikely that this would change any near future unless something
significant happens within the IETF that changes their mind. What this
does not, however, mean is that SILC specifications wouldn't be published
as RFCs. They are going to be published as RFCs. Most RFCs published by
IETF are released in the Non-Standards Track, for example, IRC protocol
and numerous other, even though IRC can be considered to be de-facto
standard in the Internet. It is also important to publish SILC as RFCs
now so that any possible future development of new version of SILC
protocol could begin, should SILC community decide that's necessary.

SILC specifications has now been submitted to the RFC Editor for
publishing. This process will take several months to complete. I will
let you know what is going on with that when I have more information.
All these processes are public and you can also view them at the
www.ietf.org.

 	Pekka
