Bugzilla

Hi,

I am letting people know that our project has ceased using the Bugzilla
(bugzilla.silcnet.org) as the bug tracking database system.  The reasons
follow in this email.  The new system will be introduced with the new
website that will be released next week.  The new system provides simple
bug submitting form on the website and the information about the
submission are delivered currently to the silc-devel mailing list, the
place where SILC development discussion is supposed to happen.  The bugs
are discussed then on the mailing list.

The bugzilla has been in use over a year now and as the main developer,
and as the person that is responsible over 99% of the bugs submitted to
the database, I have yet to have one day during that year that I have
enjoyed using it.  The bugzilla was pretty much forced upon me and I
decided to give it a try.  Practice has shown that often fixing the bug is
less work than managing the bug in the bugzilla.  This is the main reason
why bugzilla has to go.  I haven't liked a bit about the fact that during
fixing the bug, and after fixing the bug I still have to spend time with
managing the bug in the database.  To me that's something I am not
supposed to need to do.

The new system is simple email to the development mailing list, the place
which I always look for as the place where discussions about development,
bugs, new features, etc. is supposed to happen.  Currently the bug
submission emails will go to silc-devel mailing list, but practice in the
future will show whether we need a separate list for the bugs or even
separate lists for different software packages.  For now, however, the
destination is silc-devel and I am expecting it to work very well.  The
submission form in the new website also allows searching of already
submitted bugs in the mailing list.  The form is reserved only for bug
submissions, as there are separate forms for feature requests and normal
support requests.

This change is of course because I didn't like the bugzilla, but I know
many people like to use Bugzilla or Request Tracker or Scarab or similar
to managing the bugs.  I disagree with that as a developer and I always
try to optimize my time I have to spend with fixing a bug.  Only time will
tell whether the new system proves better than the old one.  I thank Toni
for setting up and administrating the Bugzilla.
