That depends highly on the terminal that you use. If your terminal
does transparency, it's quite easy to achieve. See slrn's reference
manual:

[snip]
  5.3 Configuration commands
  [...]
  color
  Usage: color display_element foreground background [attributes]
[snap]

There is a special value for 'background': 'default', which uses your
terminal as its bg-color. If your terminal is black, or uses
transparency doesn't matter for 'default'.
