How about a "post lowest-possible charset" feature?

In mutt, there's the $send_charset variable, eg.:

set send_charset="us-ascii:iso-8859-1:iso-8859-15:utf-8"

which ATM, in an UTF environment, would be for slrn
"us-ascii:utf-8". Which means that all stable slrn users read my
posts with garbled umlauts displayed -- unless they use a similar
macro that translates from UTF.
