Unfortunately, this is not a solution but merely a workaround. As I
said, the problem shows up when running in an UTF-8 terminal, but your
solution basically says: "don't use an UTF-8 terminal"! :)

This is not feasable in my case, as my typical usage of slrn is through
a GNU/Screen session opened on a remote host to which I access via SSH.

In the same GNU/Screen session I run other programs that need UTF-8,
such as irssi and mutt, so my remote and home system use an UTF-8
encoding as default LANG, and I launched screen with the -U switch (to
enable UTF-8).

I think that I could disable UTF-8 only for the GNU/Screen virtual
window that contains slrn, but I'm not sure whether this is going to
work.

As I see it, UTF-8 support is not ready there for slrn? Thats really so
bad, because slrn is by far the best text-based NNTP client out there,
in my opinion.
