Certainly.  It was careless of me to leave some of that stuff in.

I'm making steady progress and have used slrnpull to download many 
headers in my selected newsgroup which appear at separate files in a 
directory under /var/spool/news.

I also have learned to use ESC 2 L to bring up my list of subscribed 
newsgroups (currently only 1)
and have seen that if I hit ENTER I will be offered a look at all or sum 
lesser number of headers.

Currently I'm working on how to mark headers for retrieval, what the 
headers will look like when marked and, finally, how to download the 
selected posts.

That should take care of the showstoppers and at that point it should be 
possible to start actually using slrn.

You've been most helpful and I am grateful.  It may seem like I've asked 
a lot of newbie questions but what you don't see are all the issues I've 
figured out myself by reading, searching the web and just plain 
experimentation.
