I think the problems with UTF-8 and legacy character sets are the main issue, 
since they cause problems even for experienced slrn users in pl1 and cvs.

So just to tidy things up, should I try to construct a patch to remove the 
obsolete stuff? I see no point in confusing users with grouplens (defunct) 
and verbatum (misspelled) in a 1.0 (or 0.9.9) release.

Speaking of documentation, what's the i18n status? If there are going to be 
changes to the documentation, at least a German translator needs to be ready 
to check the *.po files, and preferably other translators too.

I think the option to use libslang1 instead of libslang2 also needs to be 
deprecated, if not abolished. Unicode is hardly *new*.
