Could you provide some more data? Are you running in an UTF-8 environment? Does slrn crash on every post from "Klaus Becker" with that x-face header or just with some of them? Could you perhaps try to run slrn in a debugger, hit the "stop" button when slrn starts eating memory and provide a backtrace? I did some debugging today and my slrn perfectly decoded this really broken X-face line.
