Yes, sorry .. I vaguely remembered this from the screen mailing list
just after I posted my reply .. I just had the time to display $TERMCAP
and I saw it was initialized to - among other things what looked like
only 8 color pairs ..  I guessed that might be the problem .. but then I
didn't have the time to check the syntax of the bash "unset" builtin.

I tried "unset $TERMCAP" where it should have been "unset -v TERMCAP".

I did the latter just after I came home tonight and the script displayed
all the pretty colors I was expecting.

Now I just have to find out for what purpose screen (presumably)
initializes this variable and whether I can safely unset it  -- and then
find the proper way to do this without messing up everything.

Otherwise, I have already changed my "quote*" color entries in my
.slrnrc from the default colors to the same shades of grey, pale yellows
and golds that I use in mutt .. and not only did it work right off the
bat ... but I immediately felt a lot more comfortable with slrn.   

I feel like Santa Claus stopped by two months early this year.
