The image with the boxes instead of characters looks quite similar to my solaris box when I try to read Chinese postings when not having the appropriate fonts installed. You might also want to check the "charstet Display" value configured in slrn. If it is really a font problem (I have in windows just 2 fonts available) you might want to add some more fonts for the console.
