That file contains:

Character set configuration:
        display=US-ASCII

        outgoing=US-ASCII
        editor=
S-Lang UTF-8 configuration:

        SLsmg:    0
        SLtt:     0

My guess is that slrn is trying to convert é to US-ASCII and is
failing.  You probably need to specify an ISO-Latin character set in
your .jedrc file, e.g.,

   charset config "iso-8859-1"
