Just for the record:
John solved this lightning fast in S-Lang pre2.1.4-7

There was the following change in ncurses:
| + modify the support for filesystems which do not support mixed-case to
|   generate 2-character (hexadecimal) codes for the lower-level of the
|   filesystem terminfo database (request by Michail Vidiassov).

After I changed customized ~/.terminfo entries to the new layout,
I was stuck.

In case anyone is using a bleeding edge ncurses, and encounters a
similar issue, upgrade S-Lang.
