Trouble with umlauts in ISO locale

Hi list,

I'm building the current SVN version of slrn with the following
options:

[snip]
./configure --enable-strict-from --enable-mid-cache --enable-spool  \
            --enable-charmap     --with-ssl         --enable-decode
[snap]

Which results in:

[snip]
% /usr/local/bin/slrn --version
slrn pre0.9.9-77
        * Note: This version is a developer preview.
S-Lang Library Version: 2.1.3

Operating System: Linux

COMPILE TIME OPTIONS:
 Backends: +nntp -slrnpull +spool
 External programs / libs: -canlock -inews +ssl -uudeview +iconv
 Features: +decoding +emphasized_text +end_of_thread +fake_refs +gen_msgid
    -grouplens +msgid_cache +piping +rnlock +spoilers +strict_from

DEFAULTS:
 Default server object:     nntp
 Default posting mechanism: nntp
[snap]

My locale setup:

[snip]
% locale
LANG=
LC_CTYPE=de_DE@euro
LC_NUMERIC="POSIX"
LC_TIME="POSIX"
LC_COLLATE="POSIX"
LC_MONETARY="POSIX"
LC_MESSAGES="POSIX"
LC_PAPER="POSIX"
LC_NAME="POSIX"
LC_ADDRESS="POSIX"
LC_TELEPHONE="POSIX"
LC_MEASUREMENT="POSIX"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="POSIX"
LC_ALL=
[snap]

de_DE@euro is an alias for ISO-8859-15.

With this setup, every umlaut is displayed as '?'.
If I'm starting slrn like this: 'LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 slrn' and use
an utf8-aware terminal like urxvt, the characters are displayed
correctly.

With the slrn-package from debian-experimental umlauts are working
fine in ISO locales (with exactly the same configuration).

'--version' from the debian-binary:

[snip]
% /usr/bin/slrn --version
Slrn 0.9.8.1pl2 [2007-01-25]
        * Note: This version is based on a CVS HEAD checkout.
S-Lang Library Version: 2.1.3
        * Note: This program was compiled against version 2.0.6.

I do realize, that this yields '+charset_mapping', which is missing in
the output of my SVN build. However, I thought '--enable-charmap'
would be responsible for enabling this.

What am I missing?

Regards, Frank
