timeout for news servers

Hi all,

is there a common behavior how news servers handle timeouts and how slrn would react?

The news server I use (news.nexgo.de) feels different nowadays.

Before, when I left my computer, returned after some time and wanted to read again or check for new postings, the results where returned immediately. Nowadays slrn tries "reading" for a very long time, without much success. It may take minutes until the result will be shown.

My guess is that some timeout from the news server was installed recently. This would require a reconnect and relogin.

Whenever I quit slrn and start it again, I have immediate access to the groups and postings.

This news server itself got some weired malfunctions: it does distribute requests to other servers behind $NNTPSERVER which have a different posting number within the group, resulting in "article not available" errors. set broken_xref 1 did not fix it completely. Thus there may be other strange things happening on this server farm.

How does slrn cope with timeouts - and could it be improved?

Thanks,
Martin
