indeed, it does.  you just have to know it.

a very good point.  i completely overlooked this.
i hope i will not forget!

but - is there a way to put the version info on one line?
you know, i really like it the way it's done with vim:

  VIM - Vi IMproved 7.1 (2007 May 12, compiled Dec 18 2007 16:23:46)
  Included patches: 1-175

ok - that's two lines.  ;)

this is how it looks now:

  slrn pre0.9.9-94
          * Note: This version is a developer preview.
  S-Lang Library Version: 2.1.3
  Compiled at: Feb 13 2008 04:59:11
  Operating System: Linux

and this is pretty ragged.  and i think that
the version number has too many parts already.

and this is how i envision it:

  slrn 0.9.999 for Linux [2008-02-22, compiled Fri Feb 22 13:23:42 CET 2008]

one line, simple version number style (1.2.3);
name of operating system; the release date of the source
code; and a line that states when it had been compiled.

or, to make it easier for veryone to understand the info:

  Software + Version:  slrn 0.9.999
  Linked to  library:  S-Lang 2.1.3
  Source Released on:  2008-02-22
  Operating   System:  Linux ... 2.6.18-4-xen-amd64
  Compile  Date+Time:  Fri Feb 22 13:23:42 CET 2008

overkill?  maybe.  ;-)
