When slrn(pull) queries the server for articles, the server reports
the minimum and maximum article numbers that it has listed in its
database.  However, this does not mean that the server has all the
articles in that range because some may have been canceled and are no
longer available.  I am sure that you are seeing the effect of this.
To verify that this is happening, try connecting directly to your nntp
server and request the missing article number.

Note that slrnpull stores the server's min/max article number
information in the .minmax file in the groups spool directory.  It
uses that information to query the server for articles newer than the
max number.  In spool mode, slrn compares the numbers in the min/max
file to the ranges in the newsrc file and makes a calculation of how
many unread articles there are assuming that all articles are
available.  This number is what is reported when you enter a
newsgroup.  But again, it does not reflect the number of articles that
are actually available to read.
