It's a bug of the leopard terminal,if "set LANG environment variable in startup" (in settings-Advanced) is set, even if is set to UTF-8, it causes confusion to slrn and mutt. The problem persists after deleting $LANG initialization in ~.profile, the workaround is to uncheck that option and set $LANG in the startup script.
