I run black text on a white background myself, although I believe
that you and I are a minority :-). Have you tried "default" for the
background rather than "white"?.

Actually there are no binaries on the slrn site and the copy of S-Lang
2.1.3 is there really for 'emergency' use in case JED's site dies =
probably highly unlikely. S-Lang should really come from:

http://www.jedsoft.org/slang/

Looks like I need to talk to the fellow that put that file on the slrn
web site and set him straight :-).
