missing News directory

I'm running slrn 0.9.8.1pl1 [2005-02-17] on Debian 2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-486. When I installed slrn it failed to install a $HOME/News directory which should contain My_Posts and My_Replys files. I also have Ubutu 8.04 on the box also with slrn (I forget which release).
