scoring related slowdown in group loading

Recently (within the past few weeks) the loading rate of groups
suddently dropped from 100-200 articles/sec down to maybe 5-10
articles per second.

Removing the following two lines from my .score file eliminates
the slowdown.

 Score: =0
  Newsgroups: gmane.os.ecos.general

Before the slowdown happened, my .score file had been unchanged
for at least a year, and the slrn build I'm running
(pre0.9.9-102) has also been unchanged for a year.

I haven't traced the NNTP traffic yet, but it sure seems like
the two .score lines above are preventing slrn from using the
overview feature.

Any ideas on why the sudden slow-down when there's a
"Newsgroups" specification in the .score file?
