I tried to reproduce it here, but I see a different behaviour. slrn indeed complains about this charset and stops to do the progress counting, but it continues to fetch the articles. So for me this happens at article 3651 of 123972. This seems that slrn stopped, but as this is really a huge amount of articles to fetch. For me it needs 3-4 minutes to finish. Perhaps you've just not been patient enough. You could start slrn with | slrn --debug /tmp/slrn.debug and check the debug file if slrn really stops. Your slrn version would of course also be helpful.
