I had the problem in 10.4 and its Terminal for a while and changed directly from the ibook G4 to the latest MBP. I now have to fix stuff between G4 and Intel, 32 or 64 bits where compilation does not work yet (a conflict between gawk which requires libiconv and libiconv which requires gawk, while libiconv is not usable)... So I do not know yet whether a new compilation would have fixed it... But for the moment the "default" solution is good enough for me.
